Joe Metheny was an American serial murderer who allegedly murdered drug addicts living on the streets of Baltimore, Maryland, dismembered their bodies, and used their meat in the burgers he sold to the general public. Despite the widespread dissemination of this urban legend, very little is known about Joe Metheny beyond the fact that he was a violent vicious guy who killed for the sheer enjoyment of it.
Matt’s Thoughts
The shocking nature of human hamburgers being marketed to the public drew me to this tale. I’ve always been fascinated by stories about serial killers, but the one about the six-foot-one, extraordinarily huge man who carved up his victims—mostly homeless women who had been forgotten by society—seemed too absurd and terrible to be genuine.
Reading the Wikipedia article about Joe Metheny prompted me to learn more by consulting the other accessible articles on the subject. Many of them appeared only after he was convicted, and even then provided no detail about the killer’s origins and motivations. He admitted to doing it, so we know that it brought him joy, at the very least. However, there is no way to verify the veracity of the confession I read to you in this episode of Deep Lore, even though he has been dead for five years.
Everyone thinks they’re the hero in their own story, but in this case, it’s hard not to wonder if Joe Metheny is just being dishonest. It’s true that he performed cruel deeds against others just for the fun of it, but his story appears mostly fabricated in his own mind, like Arthur Fleck’s in the 2019 film Joker. I can’t help but speculate if or whether, in his mind, he believed himself to do these things and merely Confessed the deception before he died, burying the truth along with him.
