On July 23rd, 2007 in Santa Catarina Brazil, one of the most atrocious crimes imaginable was committed by 16 year old Daniel Patry when he tortured and murdered his friend, 12 year old Gabriel Kuhn after being ripped off in the online MMO video game Tibia.
Matt’s Thoughts:
As long as I can remember, I’ve liked video games. Some of my favorite times with friends and family have been when we were all holding a controller. But MMO games are something I’ve never been able to get into. When they first became popular, I didn’t have time for them. But I have friends who were so hooked on them that they missed out on opportunities and relationships.
However this is a story that doesn’t put the onus of Daniel Patry’s actions on video games. He is a violent, sociopathic maniac (unlicensed therapist diagnosis), who didn’t understand how to calm his emotions and think rationally.
I feel like kids today don’t have a lot of tools to help them self-regulate and handle their emotions. Daniel’s cruel treatment of Gabriel is just horrible. Even scarier is the fact that he’s walking around free.
