The Odozi Obodo Cult was created by Nwiboko Obodo, who hailed from Isieke, a village a few kilometers from Abakaliki. In the village, he put together a group to stop crimes from happening. But the group’s actions soon became dangerous and oppressive, and people in the village started to think that the group was killing people. During this time, cult members’ incomes started to rise, and they started to show off their money, which brought in more people. The village’s high priest, Obodo, would pay the taxes of adults in the village and then charge them fines. If they couldn’t pay, their farm or property would be taken away. Eventually he was arrested and convicted for murdering his wife in cold blood.
